Lezley Zen was born Tanya Cannon on February 19, 1974, in Charleston, South Carolina — of Cherokee and Irish descent, which gives her a distinctly exotic look that reads differently in a still image than it does in motion. Before any of what she is known for now, she worked as a manager of a Westin Hotel restaurant and an Italian Trattoria in South Carolina. She attended college for three years and was in a pre-law program. That trajectory — hospitality management, pre-law, the controlled chaos of a front-of-house floor — tells you something about the temperament. Zen is not someone who stumbled into anything. She calculates.

After divorcing her first husband she began competing in bikini and wet t-shirt contests. She eventually met her future fiancé Ron, then a personal trainer, and began working with him. Through contacts made in the various contests she entered, she set up a meeting with Brad Armstrong and Jonathan Morgan of Wicked Pictures. She has stated in interviews that she originally became a performer to both pay off debts accumulated from her divorce and to "spite" her fiancé, who began appearing in films at the same time. That's a specific kind of motivation. It has an edge to it.

A Wicked Debut

She entered the industry in 2001, debuting in the Wicked Pictures production Serenity's Roman Orgy. The timing was right — gonzo and exhibitionist-style content were peaking in mainstream adult production, and Zen had the physicality and the composure to work at that level without being absorbed by it. She appeared in various softcore productions for Playboy TV, HBO, Cinemax and Showtime, was nominated in 2002 for AVN's "Best New Starlet" Award, and eventually won AVN's "Best Supporting Actress – Film" Award in 2005.

That award came for her performance in Bare Stage, a Vivid Entertainment production directed by David Stanley. Zen portrayed Holly "Wood" Hershel, a compassionate prostitute who befriends the lead character upon her arrival, becomes her roommate, and eventually serves as her manager. It is the kind of supporting role that gets ignored in most industries. In this one it got her a trophy. She has also been nominated for four XRCO Awards, including "Unsung Siren" and "Best Single Performance – Actress."

Over the course of her career, which extended until at least 2019, she performed in more than 430 scenes and films. That is not a minor résumé. She worked with production companies including Girlsway, Private, Bangbros, MetArt Network, Naughty America, Hustler, Evil Angel, and Filly Films, among others.
